Most severe drought in the last 50 years in Pantanal
Transpantaneira Road
MT, Brazil
09.2021
The drought that hit the Pantanal in 2021 is already the biggest in 50 years. The largest floodplain in the world, considered one of the “hotspots” of biodiversity on the planet, is subjected to an intense process of desertification. Millions of animals lose their lives or agonize in front of a sad scenario. The streams that before, even in the dry season, provided food and water for the animals, are drying up every day.
In order to minimize impacts on the environment, volunteers from non-governmental organizations, such as the Group for the Rescue of Animals in Disasters (GRAD), joined IBAMA to work managing fire outbreaks and rescuing animals in danger.
